With everything already in place for HKA 15 that evening, the venue, the ring, the theatre stage, we decided to do something different earlier in the day.
Not a gym show.
Not a beginners’ platform.
And not the full-scale evening gala with lights, walkouts and big production.
Instead, we created a high-level semi-contact “Day Show”, designed for fighters with five or more bouts under their belts. Talented, skilled athletes who are ready to level up, but not quite at full-contact evening status yet.
Big ring. Theatre stage. Stripped back. No light show, just fighting.
And it worked.
Fight Highlights
Xavier delivered his best performance to date in a close, competitive bout. It didn’t go his way this time, but sometimes the lesson is more valuable than the win. He improves every outing.
Jayen secured a controlled victory in what was arguably his sharpest boxing display so far. The next level is there for him, once he fully trusts and listens to his corner.
Dylan opened the show with a win, mixing punches and kicks beautifully and scoring a knockdown with well-timed side kicks before his opponent was unfortunately unable to continue due to injury. He later stepped in again at short notice against a tougher opponent. A challenging bout, but invaluable experience.
Will Carry made a statement. In his first fight, he landed a perfectly timed roundhouse to the head for a textbook stoppage. In his second, he closed the show with a first-round body-shot stoppage. Something has clearly clicked, he’s focused and moving towards full-contact readiness.
Summer gave away over 7kg to a much taller opponent but showed real grit. Despite early nerves, she trusted her skills, used sharp footwork and side kicks, and earned a well-deserved win.
Mehan’s contest ended in a non-contest following an accidental knee. Not the outcome anyone wanted, but that’s part of the sport.
Tom C edged a hard-fought win against a strong Falcons opponent, battling asthma and fatigue to fight smart when it mattered most.
The Bigger Picture
Nine fights.
Seven wins or stoppages.
Two lessons.
Exactly what this event was meant to be, a genuine step up. Real experience for those not quite ready for the full gala spotlight… yet.
Huge credit to Jenny for matching and organising the day behind the scenes.
Proud coach moment. On to the next one. 👊
