On Friday, the team from Hastings Kombat Academy had the pleasure of attending SLA School in St Leonards for their careers fair, and what a fantastic day it turned out to be.
The event gave pupils the chance to explore different career paths, ask questions, meet local businesses and try out new activities. For us, it was a brilliant opportunity to show young people that martial arts is about much more than kicking and punching. It can build confidence, discipline, focus, leadership skills and open doors into coaching, fitness, personal development and working with others.
Throughout the day, pupils visited the fair in 45-minute groups. We had Year 6 pupils who are preparing to transition into Year 7 next year, a group of SEN pupils, and students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 all coming through and getting involved.
Our section was busy from start to finish.
Jen and Ana were on the pads, giving pupils the chance to have a go, test themselves and experience a little bit of what we do at Hastings Kombat Academy. Kelly helped run the stall, speaking with pupils, answering questions and helping everything flow throughout the day.
The energy was brilliant. So many of the pupils were excited to take part, ask questions and challenge themselves. Some were confident straight away, others were a bit nervous at first, but once they had a go, you could see their faces light up.
Even the teachers got involved, which made the day even better. It was great to see them joining in, having fun and encouraging the pupils by leading from the front. Moments like that make a real difference, because it shows the children that trying something new is for everyone.
The day was six hours of non-stop fun, activity and conversations. We spoke to so many young people about martial arts, coaching, confidence and the different opportunities that can come from being part of a positive training environment.
A huge thank you to SLA School for inviting us along and for making us feel so welcome. The pupils were a credit to the school, and the staff were fantastic throughout the day.
We hope the children left feeling inspired, a little more confident, and maybe even curious about what they could achieve if they keep pushing themselves.
From all of us at Hastings Kombat Academy, thank you for having us.
